ABOUT STAGEPLAY
Stage Play is a Tokyo-based theater company dedicated to bringing English-language Shakespeare performances to schools and universities across Japan. Its artistic director, Paula Berwanger, was the second-generation president of Praia K.K., a translation and events company that organized the Japan tour of the International Theater Company London (ITCL). Directed by Paul Stebbings, ITCL was a London-based Shakespeare troupe recognized for its cultural contributions, with Stebbings appointed Member of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth.
Under Praia’s management, ITCL toured more than 100 venues, schools, and universities across Japan.
When COVID-19 travel restrictions made it difficult for ITCL to perform in Japan, Bervangel launched Stage Play to continue bringing Shakespeare to a wider audience. She brought together a roster of professional actors in Japan to create a system that could continue to produce high-quality English-language plays. Recognizing the importance of revitalizing the theater world and supporting local artists in the post-pandemic era, Stage Play expanded its activities to focus on original productions.
Stage Play's diverse cast includes actors with PhDs in theatre, actors who have worked with Hollywood Oscar winners, actors who have performed at Shakespeare's Globe, etc. Based in Tokyo, we strive to build a sustainable theatre community, provide high quality performances while making them accessible to a wider audience.
Stage Play also combines English dialogue with high-quality Japanese subtitles to provide an environment where anyone can enjoy Shakespeare's works, regardless of their English proficiency. Through original productions, Stage Play is committed to revitalizing the theater world, supporting local artists, and providing cultural experiences for audiences and students.
